James swam on the professional circuit from 1980 until 1992. He got 2nd at Atlantic City, 3rd in Magog, and Lac St Jean in 1980. He won the 1987 Rio Coronda race in Santa Fe Argentina in a year which he was ranked 1st on the World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation Circuit.
James was an Atlantic City lifeguard in mid 1980s and won the South Jerseys for Atlantic City Beach patrol one of those years.
