Conditions 7/24/04: The general weather forecast was for a few isolated thunderstorms developing in the afternoon, hot and humid (this turned out to be an understatement!) The heat index was near 105F. The high temperature was 92F. Chance of rain 30%. The marine forecast was for South winds 10 to 15 kts. with . seas of 2 to 4 FT. Visibility was pedicted ot be occassionally below 2 NM in haze. At 6:00am it was already 81 degrees F. and >90% humidity.
The 8:00am start had a moderate SSW wind of 5-10 kts.(see chart below for the wind record for the day). But as the day worn on, the wind grew stiffer as predicted. The wind chopped up the ocean which made for a difficult swim and a challenge for the rowers to steer a straight course. The recent heat and humidity, coupled with the southerly wind, brought in a haze that reduced visibility to about a mile. The prevented rowers from seeing their end point Longport Jetty for the ocean leg. Most rowers followed the beach line as a result of the southerly wind blowing them towards it and the haze making it hard for them to judge the distance they should be away from teh beach in order to row a straight line to Longport Jetty. On the way to Longport, 3 swimmers dropped out, a testimony to the difficulty that the wind conditions created. As we rounded the Longport jetty, the swimmers still had incoming tide that lifted them into the back bays of Absecon Island. The water temperature was 75 degrees in Absecon Inlet (incoming tide), dropped to 72 degrees at Steel Pier, then down to 68-69 degrees off Margate Tower. But when we got into the back bays, the water heated up again to 75 degrees behind Atlantic City. The lead men swimmers rounded the Longport Jetty about 11:15 am. Swimmers enjoyed the incoming tide lift all the way until the Dorset Ave. bridge where it was slack. Current was light incoming but slackening as the leader approached Brigantine Bridge. The remaining swimmers got the benefit of an outgoing tide as it switched before they could get to the Venice Park bridge.
