Conditions 8/17/02: The morning started out with a very light NW wind. The sky was partly cloudy, the air was hot and humid. Water temps were 70-74F degrees. The swimmers caught the outgoing tide and benefited from it as they swim down the beach, even though it was light and fading. The ocean was relatively calm with a small ground swell from the SW. The wind stayed light NW until about 10:30am then went W then light SW. As the three lead swimmers rounded the Longport Jetty not long after 12:00noon, they received a welcome lift from the incoming tide even before reaching the rock pile. Incoming tide helped them through the back bay until about the Albany Ave. Bridge when it became a light head current for them. As they swam closer to the finish, the head tide was stronger and stronger. The swimmers reached their peak head tide at Harrah's Casino and the Brigantine Bridge. Some of the race day photos will show the pleasant weather and the strong currents at the Brigantine Bridge. Tides: High 2:26am Low 8:30am High 15:00 Low 21:30 |
